Back-to-back winter storms target snow-starved Northeast
AAxYtfi.png Story by Matthew Cappucci • 5h ago

Winter has featured paltry snowfall across the Northeast so far, but that’s about to change for many parts of the interior Northeast. One storm rolled through on Thursday night and was pulling away Friday, but two are on the way.

Winter storm warnings for heavy snow remained in effect for eastern New Hampshire and much of coastal and Downeast Maine into Friday evening, kicking off a meteorological triple play that may dent the snowfall deficit.

Another storm is on the way Sunday night into Monday, with a third coming on Wednesday. While both appear poised to deliver rain near the coast, the pair could provide a healthy helping of the white stuff for snow-deprived ski areas from Pennsylvania northward.

A region starved of snow

Snow has been scarce this season. Aside from the couple of lake-effect snowstorms that plagued Watertown, N.Y., and killed at least 47 people in Buffalo, most of the Northeast has been devoid of characteristically bitter winter weather.

Boston, for example, would ordinarily have picked up closer to 18.2 inches of snow by this point in the season on average. Instead, it has received only 4.9 inches.

Death toll in Buffalo blizzard rises because of delayed emergency response
New York City has recorded only a trace of snow — a quantity so minuscule it couldn’t even be measured. The average by now is 8.4 inches. Only 1871 featured less season-to-date snowfall as of Jan. 20.

D.C. is in a similar boat. Not a stitch of snow has fallen, compared to an average of about 5 inches for this point in the season. Baltimore and Philadelphia haven’t seen any snow yet either.

A burst of snow Thursday night in northern New England

Snow moved through New England on Thursday night into Friday morning but was primarily relegated to northern zones. Areas south of Boston received mostly rain.

The northern suburbs of Boston, including Winchester, Lexington and Saugus near Route 128, tallied an inch or two of slushy wet snow. Across Middlesex and Essex counties, closer to 2 to 3 inches fell. The greatest amount recorded anywhere in Massachusetts was 6.3 inches in Ashby.

Vermont received a plowable snowfall — with 4 inches in Waterbury, 3 inches in Montpelier and 1.5 inches in Rutland. In New Hampshire, a general 3 to 5 inches fell, except for up to 6.5 inches in Madison, just southwest of Conway. In Portland, Maine, 6.6 inches had fallen through midmorning Friday and it was still snowing.

System No. 1: Sunday

On Sunday, low pressure will form off the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula and head toward Nantucket. That would ordinarily be a classic track that would favor significant snow along the Interstate 95 corridor from Philadelphia northward, but warm air flowing off the mild ocean will once again flip snow to rain.

Snow will push through Ohio and much of Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon, covering western New York state by Sunday evening. The hills of extreme northwestern Connecticut and Berkshire County, Mass., might receive some snow after nightfall, but most of the snowfall should be confined to Vermont, western and central New Hampshire, and western Maine.

The snow will end in western Maine during the early- to midafternoon hours Monday. Accumulations of 5 to 9 inches are likely in the areas that receive the most.

Philadelphia, New York, Hartford, Conn., Providence, R.I., and Boston and Worcester, Mass., will receive mostly if not all rain. Gusty to locally strong winds and coastal flood concerns may manifest, too.

System No. 2: Tuesday into Wednesday

AA16zhyK.gif

Another system is likely to affect the Northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday. Unlike its predecessor, however, this one could be an “inside runner.” That means the center of low pressure will take an inland track, rather than slipping northeast parallel to the coastline.

Low-pressure systems in the Northern Hemisphere spin counterclockwise. That means frigid Canadian air is drawn southward on the west side of the system, whereas the east, or right, side of the system is warm. Once again, rain is favored near the coastline, with snow well inland. Given a greater propensity for moisture availability, there could be double-digit snowfall in northern Vermont, New Hampshire and western Maine.

Storms to bring one-two punch of wintry weather to the Northeast
AAP2MVI.png Story by Renee Duff • 8h ago

AccuWeather meteorologists say a storm at the end of the weekend will not be the last wintry hit for parts of the Northeast in the short-term as yet another storm is on tap for the middle of the week. Even with the back-to-back blows, experts say the snow drought may hold strong for at least part of the Interstate 95 corridor.

A shift in the weather pattern has put a stop to the relentless storm train in California and instead directed larger, moisture-packed storms into the Eastern states. One storm will affect the region Sunday into Monday before the second system arrives by Wednesday.

The anticipated track of these storms, combined with a lack of cold, dry air out ahead of them, will limit the potential for a blockbuster snowstorm to unfold. Still, enough snow, rain and wind can accompany each storm to make for slow and slippery travel.

The first storm in the pair will move into the region later Sunday, after it first delivered snow to the southern Rockies and central Plains, as well as rain and thunderstorms along the Gulf coast, at the beginning of the weekend.

Cold air is marginal ahead of this system in the Northeast, so there will be a lot of mixing issues with precipitation type as a result, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roys.

Locations from Indiana and Ohio to northwestern Pennsylvania, New York state and Maine stand the best chance of receiving all snow with this event. The highest totals of over 6 inches should be confined to the highest terrain in Upstate New York and New England, though there is a chance heavier snow could extend into Down East Maine.

"For snow lovers in and near the big I-95 cities in the Northeast, it will be another disappointing storm, where umbrellas and raincoats will be the needed accessories, rather than snow boots and gloves," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Bill Deger said.

While the period of rain from the storm is not likely to last more than eight to 12 hours along I-95 from Sunday afternoon to Monday, it can be heavy enough to lead to ponding and poor visibility on area highways.

AccuWeather forecasters say the stage could be set for the next storm at midweek to deliver more snow across the interior, and perhaps even closer to the I-95 corridor, than its predecessor. This snowier solution is not a slam-dunk, however, and will depend on a number of moving parts in the atmosphere.

"There appears to be a greater risk of a burst of snow at the front-end of the midweek storm," Roys said.

A good setup for snow across the interior and along the I-95 would be for a cold high pressure area to linger over northern New England or southeastern Canada, which helps cold, dry air hold firm for a longer period of time. Forecasters say cold, dry air will be in place during the first half of next week, and that the placement of this high will be key to the ultimate expanse of snow with this storm.

Out of the two storms, the midweek storm has the better chance of delivering some snow to New York City, and especially the northwestern suburbs, according to Deger.

In the Big Apple, the longest streak of days without 0.1 of an inch of snow or greater was 332 which ended on Dec. 15, 2020. As of Saturday, Jan. 21, the current streak is at 318 and counting and is currently fourth on the all-time list.

Boston may also be in line to receive some snow during the first part of the storm. From Philadelphia southwestward to Washington, D.C., there may be enough of a mild push to limit concerns of winter precipitation to the northern and western suburbs.

Regardless of snowfall during the first part of the storm, AccuWeather meteorologists say it appears likely that milder air will move into the Northeast throughout the storm and cause a changeover to a wintry mix and rain for many locations.

Prior to its approach in the Northeast, this second storm is likely to bring an accumulation of snow to the southern Rockies and southern Plains early in the week. There is the potential for a significant snowfall around Oklahoma City and even Dallas residents could see snowflakes flying on the back half of the storm.

St. Louis, Chicago and Detroit are other major metro areas that could receive enough snow to disrupt daily routines and travel. There will be less of a concern of mixed precipitation in these areas as they'll be situated on the colder, northwestern flank of the storm.

Severe storms could spawn strong tornadoes Tuesday in South, including New Orleans metro
AAWbeZO.png Story by Brian Donegan • 4h ago

On the warm side of a winter storm that will track from Texas to the Northeast this week, parts of the storm-fatigued South are in the bull's-eye for yet another severe weather threat Tuesday and Wednesday.

A large upper-level area of low pressure will punch into the South on Tuesday, and that will spawn the development of a surface low-pressure system near the Gulf Coast. As that surface low encounters warm, humid air surging northward off the Gulf of Mexico, the atmosphere will turn unstable and become primed for the development of severe thunderstorms, including tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorms are possible near the mid- and upper Texas coast Tuesday afternoon before spreading eastward Tuesday night into parts of southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi, southwestern Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, these storms will be capable of damaging wind gusts and tornadoes, a few of which could be EF-2 or stronger.

"So we do have a very likely setup for southeast Louisiana, really paralleling I-10 through southern portions of Mississippi and Alabama," FOX Weather meteorologist Britta Merwin said. "In fact, New Orleans all the way to Pensacola (Florida), we have a high potential that we could see some isolated tornadoes, some of which could be as strong as an EF-2 or higher, which specifically for this area, that's a pretty large threat."

Less than two weeks ago, a deadly severe weather outbreak pummeled nine states across the South, which included an EF-3 tornado in Alabama that killed seven people as it tracked more than 76 miles from Autauga County to Chambers County.

"It's been a rough several weeks, and unfortunately, Tuesday night into Wednesday morning will be a timeframe to watch very closely," Merwin said. "A lot of this threat will be during the overnight hours, and that's always a very large concern because you will be sleeping. So Tuesday night into Wednesday morning is when you want to have that phone right next to your bed with your notifications turned on, so if you do get a Tornado Warning, you can act immediately."

On Wednesday, strong to severe storms could impact portions of the Southeast and southern mid-Atlantic states, the FOX Forecast Center said.

The storms will pose at least some risk for damaging wind gusts and tornadoes.

As the storm system moves off the East Coast Wednesday night, the severe weather threat will diminish for the remainder of the week.
