The FOX Forecast Center is tracking the potential for severe weather on Monday in parts of the Plains and Mississippi Valley starting on Monday.

Tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds are all likely as the storm system moves through the region.

Things to know:

It was a wet end to 2022 and a soggy start to 2023 as another significant atmospheric river event drenches California bringing flooding, mudslides and heavy mountain snow.

Flooding was reported throughout the San Francisco Bay Area on Saturday, and several communities opened sandbag locations for residents to take action against rising creeks and streams.

As temperatures rise in the Buffalo area more than a week after a deadly and historic blizzard, flooding is a growing concern as the frozen precipitation melts and finds its way into nearby lakes and streams.

Some areas saw more than 4 feet of snow, and the blizzard is now blamed for the deaths of more than three dozen residents.

Severe storms, tornadoes to sweep through South during 1st days of 2023
AAP2MVI.png Story by Andrew Johnson-Levine • 2h ago

Residents of the southern United States are no strangers to severe weather, with routine rounds of heavy rain, thunderstorms and even hail or tornadoes common throughout much of the year. With a large, potent storm system moving into the central United States, AccuWeather forecasters say potentially damaging storms are in the cards for much of the region to start the new year, and a variety of severe weather hazards are expected.

On New Year's Day, the source of these intense storms will still be well to the west. Accumulating snow will be ongoing in the central and southern Rockies, as well as around the Four Corners region, with rain at lower elevations. However, this storm will slowly move eastward into the Plains and intensify in the process. This will allow severe thunderstorms to develop on Monday and Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a steady wind from the south will bring moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, a key ingredient for thunderstorm development. High temperatures across the Southeast will also be well above normal in many areas.

In Houston and New Orleans, Monday is likely to bring highs in the upper 70s Fahrenheit or perhaps the low 80s in some warmer spots along the immediate coast. This is quite unusual for the time of year, with the daily record high at 81 degrees in both cities.

Farther north, in cities such as Little Rock, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee, temperatures in the low 70s will be just as unusual, falling just shy of daily record highs.

"A dip in the jet stream will bring the strongest upper-level winds into the South. When combined with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and substantially above-average temperatures, the setup will be in place for severe thunderstorms to form," AccuWeather Meteorologist Alex DaSilva explained.

The chance of severe storms will start with a bang on Monday, which will likely be the most active of the two days. Thunderstorms are likely to fire across eastern Texas and southeastern Oklahoma, quickly strengthening as they move eastward. A separate area of storms may develop farther east near the Mississippi River, meaning multiple rounds of storms may occur on Monday for some.

Residents in cities such as Dallas and Houston may have their morning commutes impacted, while much of Arkansas, Louisiana and eastern Tennessee may experience an all-day event. By evening, storms will continue to move eastward into much of Louisiana and Mississippi.

In addition to common threats such as lightning and heavy rain, damaging straight-line winds are expected from some storms. With plenty of cold air above the surface given the time of year, hail will be a concern as well. Finally, with ample wind shear in the atmosphere, the setup on Monday should promote at least a few tornadoes, which could even become strong and long-tracked, AccuWeather forecasters say.

While not as widespread as the day earlier, severe weather should continue farther east on Tuesday. Heavy rain and strong wind gusts will be the main threats, but a tornado or two cannot be ruled out.

Cities such as Birmingham, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida, will likely experience thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening, when they are most intense. Storms will also continue farther east into the late-evening hours.

"If these thunderstorms can move east quickly enough, Atlanta could be threatened with damaging wind gusts overnight. This will be most likely just to the west of the city," DaSilva said.

Those within the severe threat areas should monitor conditions closely, and keep an eye on the latest watches and warnings for your location, experts say. Should a tornado warning be issued, the lowest and most interior room of a well-built structure will be the safest place to ride out the storm.

Those traveling will want to allow increased time to reach their destination. Heavily traveled roadways such as interstates 20, 30 and 55 will be impacted. Major airline hubs such as Dallas, New Orleans and Atlanta may experience delays and cancellations, which can also cause far-reaching impacts at other airports.

This period of unsettled weather will be short-lived. By the middle to late portions of the week, dry conditions are set to return to nearly all of the Southeast.

Winter storm expected to bring snow, freezing rain and tornadoes to parts of U.S.
BBAJafS.png Story by Chantal Da Silva and Steve Strouss • 1h ago

A winter storm moving across the central Plains and Upper Midwest this week is expected to bring heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain to parts of the United States, while tornadoes could form farther south, officials have warned.

The storm is expected to bring snowfall to the Central High Plains as it tracks northeast into the Great Lakes, likely producing moderate to heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain by Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

"Intense snow rates of 1-2 inches per hour may be accompanied by thunder, especially in southern South Dakota and far southwest Minnesota," the weather service said in a forecast update early Monday. More than 12 inches of heavy snow is expected to quickly accumulate from the Panhandle of Nebraska through southwest Minnesota, it said.

Gusty winds are also expected to produce areas of blowing and drifting snow, which the weather service warned could result in snow-covered roads and reduced visibility, creating potential travel hazards.

The weather system is also expected to bring significant freezing rain to parts of northeastern Nebraska through southern Minnesota, the National Weather Service said. It warned the freezing rain could pose further travel risks and cause power outages.

Moisture from the Western Gulf of Mexico is expected to move northward over the Western Gulf Coast/Lower Mississippi Valley, with the Plains front moving into the moisture, leading to showers and severe thunderstorms over the area on Monday morning, the weather center said. An enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms over the Lower Mississippi Valley has been issued from Monday through Tuesday morning.

The thunderstorms could bring frequent lightning, severe thunderstorm wind gusts, hail and "a few tornadoes," the National Weather Service said.

Heavy rain is also expected in connection with the thunderstorms, with the weather service issuing a slight risk of excessive rainfall over parts of the Middle/Lower Mississippi Valley from Monday into Tuesday.

"The associated heavy rain will create mainly localized areas of flash flooding, with urban areas, roads, and small streams the most vulnerable," the weather service said.

There is an enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms Monday afternoon and evening across portions of east Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, Arkansas and northern Louisiana.

Nearly 19 million people are in the risk zone for storms that may produce tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, flooding downpours and hail.

Portions of Arkansas, western Tennessee, northern Louisiana, and east Texas also remain under a Flood Watch through Monday night.

On Tuesday, severe storms are expected to continue rumbling eastward and affect areas across the Tennessee Valley and the central Gulf Coast.

It comes after a "once-in-a-lifetime” blizzard left dozens dead last month, with Erie County in New York, which includes Buffalo, at the center of the storm’s most intense conditions.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that the storm was “probably worse than anything that this city has seen in over 50 years.”

Severe storms to target Florida to Virginia Wednesday
AAP2MVI.png Story by Courtney Travis • 57m ago

A multiday outbreak of severe weather will persist into Wednesday as storms rumble across the southern United States and toward the Atlantic coast.

A potent storm system in the Plains earlier this week blasted the northern tier of the country with snow and generated violent storms across the South. Monday's thunderstorms produced dozens of wind and hail reports across Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and far-northeastern Texas.

The threat of severe weather persisted Tuesday morning as several tornado warnings were issued in Louisiana and Mississippi. Elsewhere, numerous roads across Kentucky were flooded, resulting in multiple water rescues.

After severe storms develop and track across the Tennessee Valley to the Mississippi Gulf Coast through Tuesday evening, more turbulent weather is expected Wednesday, AccuWeather meteorologists say.

The threat of thunderstorms will extend from the Florida Gulf Coast into the central Appalachians Wednesday morning. As the day progresses, severe thunderstorms could develop from the Florida Panhandle to as far north as central Virginia during the afternoon and evening hours.

Some of the major cities that could be hit by robust thunderstorms Wednesday include Norfolk, Virginia, as well as Raleigh, North Carolina, and Columbia, South Carolina.

The overall concentration of severe thunderstorms Wednesday is likely to be sparser when compared to Monday and Tuesday, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski. Many areas may experience a few downpours, along with gusty winds and a few rumbles of thunder.

However, a small number of towns can still be hit by a severe thunderstorm Wednesday. These storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts as high as an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 75 mph and torrential downpours that could lead to ponding on roadways or even flash flooding. Meteorologists say it's not out of the question that the severe thunderstorms could also produce a couple of tornadoes Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Motorists along major highways in the region, such as portions of interstates 10, 20, 75, and 95, should be cautious of these hazards since they could lead to traffic slowdowns.

The risks of wet weather, thunderstorms and slowed travel could even extend into the Northeast Wednesday.

A strong surge of warm air is preceding the dose of wet weather in the Northeast. High temperatures Wednesday could be as much as 20 degrees above normal for the area, and some locations could challenge records.

A few rumbles of thunder could reach as far north as Pennsylvania and New Jersey Wednesday, an area that includes major cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. While thunder is not unheard of in the month of January in the Northeast, it's much less common than across the southern U.S.

Behind the wet weather, temperatures across the eastern U.S. are expected to fall back to normal January levels. AccuWeather meteorologists say the next opportunity for rain could come as early as the weekend.
